I was inspired by a fellow photographer to look back into some of my “firsts” as a photographer. I’ve always looked back at my previous work with thoughts of “Gosh, that’s terrible…what was I thinking??” Now though, my perspective has taken a new route. Although, my work back then was in no way “superb,” it still was something to call my own, and something that equipped me with the skills I have needed to succeed today. I’ve always prayed that my clients will adore their photos, whether technically correct or not…and I still really hope that all of my first families are still in love with their images. Because I have learned through many trials that perfect exposure, focus, and color doesn’t necessarily matter when you are capturing the unique love and personality within a family.
I have learned a lot since I purchased my first SLR camera back in October of 2009. Wow, I can’t believe it has been almost 3 years since I began this journey. It has been a good one, and I have been loved and supported by many every step of the way.
Here are a few of my “firsts” followed by some of my most recent work. Enjoy!
My very first family, the Elwells…back in 2009.
Yes, I can pick out a million things I did wrong with this photo, but isn’t this still a beautiful family? Yes, it is!
And the Kellogg family…ah, much better lighting!
My first newborns…on the left is my own baby (Miller) and on the right is Keana (my first PAID newborn)
And a newborn from a few months back, little TJ.
My first wedding! Mr. & Mrs. Gray will be celebrating their 2 year anniversary this September!
I did a lot of black/white to cover up my exposure and white balance mistakesAnd of course, I had no clue how to recover those highlights!
Nevertheless, this couple is absolutely perfect. They are “in love” ALL the time, they are one of those couples that were truly meant to be together!
Haley & Andrew…June 2012
Yay! For having no fear of COLOR!
On the left…taken on the very first day I had my first camera in 2009. Edited with good ole’ Pioneer Woman actions!
On the right, little girl from last month…learned to customize my own black and whites
On the left…whoa! Not a good way to cut off a little boy’s head!
On the right…sometimes cutting a little off the top is cute
Crazy angles…this is one of the photos where I can totally say, “What was I thinking?”
Good angleMy favorite angle!
BAD example of using texture!
Good example of using texture…
Nope! There is no good way of using texture! Stay away, far away!
There you go…three years of mistakes…three years of learning, and three years of absolute fun!
Let’s see what the next three years hold!
