Since we have moved here to Las Vegas, my husband has been on the hunt for some great fishing spots. You see, fishing is one of his greatest life passions; he grew up fishing in some of California’s most beautiful rivers and lakes…and he has been completely surprised at the complete lack of WATER in the great city of Las Vegas. Well, a co-worker of his recently told him about Cold Creek. Just 30 minutes northwest of the city, is what I have read about as “Las Vegas’ best kept secret.”
Indeed it is! It wasn’t much for fishing, but it was so much more than that!
A breathtaking view of the desert…God’s creation in all of it’s beauty…an enormous flatland of gorgeous scenery…and the largest population of wild horses in the United States.
Wow. I was beside myself as we drove the little road down to the small, muddy ponds. We stopped a few times so my children could get a good view of the horses, and we learned pretty quickly how friendly they were! I was a little hesitant to stick my hand out the window, as they are WILD, but hey…I took a chance. Once we stopped at the pond, a couple camping close by gave us a bag of carrots, and then we were in for it…the sweet ole horses wouldn’t leave us alone! Some were even a little too friendly!
Our kids played in the muddy muck while the horses drank nearby.
You can see how close we were to them and how interested they were to be next to us. They were hungry, I guess…a little too close for my comfort though, the brown one on the left backed me into my car door, you can see the top of the window at the bottom of the photo. I had nowhere to go!
My husband and his parents were enjoying the beautiful blue skies while watching one horse bathe herself!
A precious baby colt!
We saw this as we drove into the Cold Creek community. Horses lined the people’s yard, uninvited I’m sure, to eat to their heart’s content!
Isn’t this one of the most beautiful sights??
I know it’s not Hawaii, and I know it’s not Niagara Falls, but to me…this just proves again that God has created such an amazing world…He gave us the ability to find beauty in the most unimaginable places!
And lastly, my favorite image…this was the stallion, I assume he was the leader of the herd. We saw him over and over again protecting his herd from the other horses. He would run them off if they got too close and was constantly on the look out for any potential dangers. I love that!
This was the second time in the past month we have come out here, the first time I didn’t bring my camera! These pictures were all taken in broad daylight, so I am really hoping to go out there again soon, maybe around sunset for some amazing photo opportunities!
Hope you enjoy!
